South Salt Lake yards, and what they need

South Salt Lake sits right next door to Sugar House, with neighborhoods tucked between State Street, Central Pointe and the parks along Mill Creek, like Fitts Park. Most of the city is flat, which makes for easy mowing and quick cleanups, and a lot of yards here are smaller lots where a weekly mow-and-edge keeps everything sharp.

Flat ground and a high water table also mean soil can stay wet and pack down, especially in yards that see a lot of foot traffic. Core aeration in spring or early fall loosens compacted soil so water and fertilizer actually reach the roots, and it’s the best time to overseed thin spots.

Does South Salt Lake pick up leaves?

The city runs a Fall Leaf Bag Program from October 1 to the end of November. Each household can pick up five free bags at City Hall, fill them with leaves only (40 lb or less) and set them at the curb, not in the street. Or our leaf removal rakes and hauls them away for you.

Can I rake leaves into the street in South Salt Lake?

No. The city won’t collect leaves raked into the street and fines are possible. Leaves in the gutter also clog storm drains.

When can I water my lawn in South Salt Lake?

South Salt Lake prohibits outdoor watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Early morning is the best time to run sprinklers.
